Burdekin - Haughton

The Burdekin – Haughton Water Supply Scheme includes the Burdekin Falls Dam, a number of weirs on the Burkekin and Haughton Rivers, and three major channel distribution systems. SunWater is the service provider for the scheme, and operates as a commercial entity.

The scheme supplies the Burdekin River Irrigation Area, the North and South Burdekin Water Boards and NQ Water.

In January 2002 the Queensland Competition Authority was directed to assess a number of matters in relation to the services provided by SunWater to irrigators in the Burdekin River Irrigation Area. In particular, the Authority was requested to determine the capital contributions made by various parties, identify any capital not accounted for by capital contributions, estimate an appropriate Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) for pricing purposes and determine whether current price paths incorporate any excess return on capital.

The Authority’s Final Report was released in April 2003.
