Electricity - Retail

Under the Electricity Act 1994, as amended for the introduction of Full Retail Competition (FRC), the Queensland Competition Authority has a number of functions related to retail electricity.

Notice to Customers At 9pm Friday 18 December 2009, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) issued a notice suspending Jackgreen International Pty Ltd from trading in the National Energy Market. Effective from midnight 18 December 2009 Queensland customers of Jackgreen will be automatically transferred to Origin Energy or Country Energy depending on location. Transfers will occur automatically and customers are not required to do anything to ensure their continuity of supply. For more information on the Suspension of Jackgreen International click here

Issues

The Authority's responsibilities include the following retail electricity issues:

• Calculating the Benchmark Retail Cost Index on an annual basis; and
• Establishing a Consumer Advisory Committee to advise the Authority on the interests of consumers in the exercise of the Authority's responsibilities under the Electricity Supply Act and Gas Supply Act.
• Maintaining public registers, such as standard large customer retail contracts.
• Enforcement of and proposing amendments to, the Electricity Industry Code.
• Monitoring and Enforcing the Electricity (Retail Billing Guaranteed Service Level Scheme) Code.
• Administering the Retailer of Last Resort Scheme.
