You will need to provide the Price Comparator with some details about your electricity and/or gas consumption. Your previous electricity and gas bills have the details you need. Before you begin to use the Price Comparator, make sure you have your bills in front of you. The Price Comparator works best if you have four previous bills but it can make do with only one.

The relevant units of consumption are kilowatt-hours (kWh) for electricity and mega-joules (Mj) for gas.

Step-by-Step

  1. Choose which type of comparison you would like to make - just electricity, just gas or both (dual fuel). If you choose the dual fuel option, you will be shown results for all of the generally available electricity, gas and dual fuel (combined) contracts.
    Please note that a dual fuel offer is one that includes both electricity and gas in one contract. You may find that a combination of separate electricity and gas contracts is more suitable for you.
  2. Enter the information required by the Price Comparator, including:
    • whether you use a controlled electricity supply (eg. for hot water);
    • how many bills you are using to make the comparison - the price comparison will be more accurate if you use four bills that cover your energy usage over an entire year, but you are able to use only one. If you are using only one bill, select the season that the bill best represents;
    • information about your energy use - the number of days in each billing period and the total number of units of electricity and/or gas used in each period; and
    • for gas comparisons, the location of your property - this is relevant to the gas contracts that are available in your area.
  3. A results report is then generated with all of the generally available retail contracts relevant to your energy use details and geographical location. For each contract, the report shows the annual energy cost and any applicable non-cash rewards.
  4. The results report allows you to identify your current contract by selecting the appropriate box in the right-hand column. The estimated annual savings of each contract are measured against the selected contract. Your current contract selection is initially based on the most commonly used contract in the market. You can change this by selecting the box corresponding to a more appropriate contract - the results report will then refresh, with the annual saving measured against the identified contract.
