The Department of Natural Resources and Mines Energy (DNRME) reviewed the framework governing applications for mining leases and the grounds for objecting to an application.
As a result of this review, DNRME developed the mining lease notification and objection initiative which seeks to improve the framework by:
- streamlining and removing duplicated notification requirements
- ensuring objection rights are relative to the risk, scale and impact of the mining operation
- ensuring the Land Court's considerations are for relevant matters
- reducing red tape and assessment times for the granting of a mining lease.
Following consultation on the proposals through a discussion paper and associated regulatory assessment, DNRME prepared a Decision Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) which considers and responds to the issues raised in submissions.
